Toilet still runs after a new flapper
Running toilet
Why a new toilet flapper can still let the tank run — size and style, chain slack, pitted seats, fill-valve height, and bleach tablet damage.

A brand-new flapper should stop the silent run — but only when size, chain, and seat all match. If the tank still refills or the water keeps whispering into the bowl, walk these checks before you buy another flapper.
Confirm size and style
Flappers are not one-size. Match diameter (often 2″ vs 3″), chain vs rigid link, and the ear or frame style to your flush valve. A “close enough” flap can sit crooked and leak. Start from the basics in Toilet keeps running — flapper check first.
Chain slack
Set the chain so there is about ¼–½ inch of slack when the flapper is closed. Too tight and the flap never seats; too loose and it can catch under itself. Flush once and watch that the flapper drops centered on the seat.
Pitted or rough flush-valve seat
If the seat where the flapper lands is pitted or mineral-rough, a soft new flap still leaks. A flush-valve repair kit (new seat surface) or a full valve swap fixes that — not a third flapper.
Water into the overflow tube
If water spills into the overflow tube, the tank is filling too high. Adjust the fill-valve float or height so the waterline sits below the overflow top. That is not a flapper problem. Full fix: toilet water spilling into the overflow tube.
Bleach tank tablets
In-tank bleach or harsh cleaner tablets can warp rubber flappers and degrade seals. Skip them; clean the bowl with ordinary cleaners outside the tank.
Dye test still helps
Drop food coloring in the tank, wait without flushing, and watch the bowl. Color in the bowl means the seal still leaks — recheck seat and chain. No color but the valve still cycles means the fill valve may be the noisemaker.
Honest stop
Cracked tanks, floor seepage, or wax-ring failures are plumber jobs. Stay inside the tank for this guide.
