Brush dryer vent cleaning toward the outside

Dryer vent

During dryer vent cleaning, brush so lint moves toward the outdoor hood — not deeper into the wall — especially when the dryer takes two cycles.

A soft brush helps dryer vent cleaning, but direction matters: push lint toward the outdoor flap so you do not pack a wad deeper in the wall sleeve.

Brush dryer vent cleaning toward the outside

  1. Unplug the dryer (and shut gas off if your maker requires it). Pull the machine forward enough to reach the indoor duct joint safely.
  2. Disconnect the flexible or rigid section at the dryer. Look toward the wall run and the outdoor hood path before you insert a brush.
  3. Work the brush toward the outdoor vent, not back toward the dryer. Short strokes that walk lint outward beat long jabs that shove a plug deeper.
  4. Finish at the outdoor flap: clear lint from the hood so the flap swings freely. Reconnect the duct without crushing the hose, then test one dry load.

If the run is long, rigid, or you smell burning lint, stop and use a technician path instead of forcing the brush.

Honest stop

Never run the dryer with the vent disconnected as a “cleaning shortcut.” If brushing does not restore airflow and the dryer takes two cycles, treat it as a clogged or crushed run — not another soft pass.
