Dryer vent cleaning — spin the outdoor flap free after you clean

Dryer vent

After dryer vent cleaning, spin the outdoor dryer vent hood flap by hand so it opens freely and is not stuck on lint — one beat before the next load.

A clean duct can still leave a sticky outdoor dryer vent hood flap that stays shut and traps moisture. After dryer vent cleaning, reach the outdoor flap and spin it open and closed by hand so lint cake is clear and the flap swings free before you run the next load.

  1. Finish brushing or vacuuming the run, then walk outside to the outdoor dryer vent hood while the dryer is off and cool.
  2. Lift and spin the flap through its full swing. Clear any lint rim or debris under the hinge so the flap falls closed under its own weight.
  3. Confirm the flap opens easily with a light push and does not stick halfway. Do not force a bent metal flap — straighten gently or plan a hood swap later.
  4. Run one short empty dryer cycle and watch outdoors: the flap should open with exhaust and settle closed when the dryer stops.

Honest stop: if the flap is iced shut or the hood is crushed, a hand spin is not enough — clear ice safely or replace the outdoor hood before the next heavy load.
