Dryer vent — wash the lint screen when dryer sheets leave a film

Dryer vent

Dryer vent and lint screen tip: dryer sheets can leave a clear film that blocks airflow. Do a quick water test and wash the screen if water pools.

A lint screen can look clean and still choke your dryer vent airflow. Dryer sheets and fabric softener can leave a thin, clear film across the mesh.

Water-test the lint screen for dryer vent airflow

  1. Pull the lint screen and peel off the visible lint as usual.
  2. Hold it level under a gentle stream of tap water.
  3. If water pools on top instead of running through, the mesh has a film.
  4. Scrub both sides with warm water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft brush, then let it dry fully before you slide it back in.

That is the beat: if water will not pass through, air will not either. A clean screen helps the whole dryer vent run cooler.
