Dryer vent cleaning at home is fine for short, visible runs — when you follow a calm household safety list. Lint in a crushed hose is a fire risk; the practical response is a clear metal path, not ignoring a second cycle.

Household dryer vent cleaning safety list

  1. Unplug the dryer (and shut gas off only if you are trained and the manual calls for it) before opening the back or pulling the duct off the outlet.
  2. Never run the dryer with the vent dumped into the room “just this once.”
  3. Prefer short rigid or semi-rigid metal with few bends. Replace crushed foil accordion hose instead of brushing it forever.
  4. After reattach: run an empty short cycle and confirm the outside flap moves. If the path through a wall/ceiling/crawl is invisible, or the cabinet feels much hotter than you remember, call a technician.

This page does not walk through opening a sealed dryer cabinet or changing heating parts.
