Furnace air filter — do not crush accordion into a thin slot

Furnace filter

Match accordion-pleat depth to your furnace filter size slot. Crushing accordion media into a thin track ruins the furnace air filter seal.

Deep accordion pleats need the full slot depth on your return. Crushing them into a thin track wrecks the seal on a furnace air filter even when the printed furnace filter size and MERV look right.

Accordion media vs rigid framed furnace air filter — fit the slot depth

  1. Measure slot depth (front-to-back), not only length × width. A 1-inch track will not take a deep 4-inch accordion media pack.
  2. Compare the new filter’s frame thickness to the old one before you buy — accordion packs are often thicker than skinny rigid fiberglass frames.
  3. Slide the filter in square. If you must compress the pleats to start the frame, you have the wrong depth — stop and return it.
  4. Confirm the airflow arrow and that the gasket or cardboard edge seats without bowed pleats.

Honest stop: never cut down a thick accordion filter to jam a thin slot — buy the depth your cabinet lists, or have HVAC confirm the rack.
