Furnace filter

Metal-mesh and electrostatic washable furnace air filter labels are not the same media. Match the label before you rinse, and keep the printed furnace filter size seal.

A washable furnace air filter may be metal mesh, electrostatic fabric, or both. Read the label before you rinse — wrong cleaning ruins media even when the printed furnace filter size still fits the slot.

  1. Pull the filter and read the frame: metal-mesh screen, electrostatic washable fabric, or hybrid. Lifetime language still means clean-and-inspect.
  2. Rinse only the way the maker allows — many electrostatic pads hate harsh soap; metal mesh may tolerate a gentle hose rinse.
  3. Dry fully before reinstall so damp media does not restrict airflow or grow musty smell.
  4. Replace when media tears, warps, or no longer seals to the printed furnace filter size — do not stack a disposable on a clogged washable.

If the blower sounds strained after a washable that will not dry flat, stop and fit a correct-size disposable until you can replace the washable.
