Furnace air filter — cut-to-fit foam is not a pleat

Furnace filter

Cut-to-fit foam is not a furnace air filter for a pleated slot. Match the printed size and use a real pleated filter so airflow stays honest.

Hardware-store cut-to-fit foam rolls are for window ACs and odd return grilles — not a drop-in furnace air filter for a pleated cabinet slot. Foam can bypass around the rack and starve the blower of a proper seal.

Cut-to-fit foam is not a furnace pleat

  1. Read the size printed on the old filter frame (length × width × thickness). Measure the slot if the label is gone.
  2. Buy a pleated filter in that exact size. Do not force a “close enough” pad or a foam sheet cut with scissors.
  3. Foam rolls lack the framed edge that seats in most furnace racks. Gaps let dust bypass; thick foam can also restrict airflow differently than a rated MERV pleat.
  4. If you need a washable option, choose a filter labeled washable for HVAC — not craft foam.

Honest stop: if the rack is bent or the door will not latch on a correct-size pleat, fix the rack — do not shim with foam.
