Furnace air filter — seat toward the hinge-side slot wall

Furnace filter

When seating a furnace air filter, prefer the hinge-side slot wall so the door closes flush and the MERV media stays square — one small beat.

A furnace air filter that floats in the middle of the slot can whistle or let the door sit crooked. Seat the media toward the hinge-side slot wall so the door closes flush and the filter size stays square.

Seat the furnace filter toward the hinge-side slot wall

  1. Note which side of the filter door has the hinge, then open the door fully.
  2. Slide the correctly sized furnace air filter in with the airflow arrow facing the right way, then nudge it until it rests against the hinge-side slot wall — not centered in empty air.
  3. Close the door and feel for a flush latch; a gap often means the filter is still floating mid-slot.
  4. Run the blower briefly: if whistle returns, reseat once toward the hinge wall — then stop and check furnace filter size if it still will not square.

Honest stop: a wrong furnace filter size will not seat cleanly no matter which wall you prefer — measure the slot before buying another MERV pack.
