Furnace air filter — slide it flush to one slot wall
Furnace filter
Seat a furnace air filter flush against one slot wall so it does not sit crooked and whistle — one small MERV-size beat.

A furnace air filter that sits crooked in the slot can whistle and leak unfiltered air around the frame. After you match furnace filter size, slide the new filter flush to one slot wall so the gasket seats evenly.
Slide the furnace filter flush to one slot wall
- Confirm the airflow arrow faces the furnace (or matches the slot emboss), and that thickness matches the slot depth you measured.
- Slide the filter in while keeping one long edge pressed gently against a single slot wall — do not center it loosely and hope the door pushes it straight.
- Close the door or clip and listen for a few seconds on the blower. A short whistle that fades as the frame seats is common; a loud ongoing whistle means reseat flush again.
- If the filter still rattles, check that you did not force a cut-to-fit foam scrap or the wrong MERV thickness into a rigid slot.
Honest stop: if the slot itself is bent or the door will not latch on a correct-size filter, stop forcing it — fix the door or call HVAC help.
