Furnace air filter — store the spare flat and in plastic

Furnace filter

Keep a spare furnace air filter ready by storing it flat in its plastic wrap. Bent frames and dusty media make a new filter fit poorly.

A spare furnace air filter saves a trip to the store, but only if it stays straight and clean until swap day.

Store a spare furnace air filter flat and wrapped

  1. Leave the filter in its plastic wrap until you install it.
  2. Store it flat or standing upright against a wall, not under heavy boxes.
  3. Keep it in a dry spot away from a laundry sink or damp floor.
  4. Check the frame before install. A bent frame lets air slip around the edges.

Write the size on the shelf so the next purchase matches.
