Furnace filter

Read furnace air filter labels so you do not rinse a disposable furnace filter — washable and disposable look similar until you check the frame.

A dirty furnace air filter looks like it wants a rinse — but most household pleats are disposable. Label cues keep you from soaking a throwaway.

Tell washable vs disposable furnace air filter

  1. Read the cardboard or plastic frame edge before you buy or rinse. Look for disposable, do not wash, or a one-time MERV rating with no wash instructions.
  2. Washable / electrostatic filters usually say washable, rinse, or permanent and often use a thicker plastic frame — not a thin cardboard pleat box.
  3. Match furnace filter size (length × width × thickness) on the frame. Size alone does not mean washable.
  4. If the frame is cardboard and the media is paper-like pleats with no wash wording, treat it as disposable: replace it; do not hose it down.

When in doubt, replace on schedule rather than rinse.

Honest stop

Rinsing a disposable filter can shred the media and send wet dust into the blower. If you already soaked one, replace it — do not reinstall a warped wet pleat.
