Washable vacuum filter must dry fully

Vacuum bag

A damp washable HEPA or foam filter kills suction and can smell musty — wash only what the manual allows, then air-dry completely.

If suction died right after you washed a filter, the media is probably still wet. Damp foam or HEPA cloth packs tight, blocks airflow, and can smell musty by the next use.

Dry completely before reinstall

  1. Wash only filters the manual marks as washable. Many “HEPA” cartridges are tap out / replace only.
  2. Rinse with plain water if allowed. Skip soap unless the maker says otherwise.
  3. Air-dry until every layer feels dry to the touch — often overnight. Do not microwave, bake, or reinstall damp.

While it dries, check the bag or dirt cup and hose using Vacuum lost suction — check bag and filters. Match replacements with Match your vacuum bag or filter type.

Honest stop

A filter that stays soggy, delaminates, or sheds foam belongs in the trash — replace it. Motor smoke or a hot smell means unplug and stop; that is not a filter-dry problem.
