Humidifier wick

Empty and dry the humidifier tank and wick path before storage so the humidifier wick and filter housing do not sit wet for months.

Storing a damp unit is how a clean humidifier wick turns musty by next season. Empty the tank and dry the wick path before you put it away.

Empty the humidifier tank before storage

  1. Unplug the unit. Pour out all tank water and empty the base reservoir.
  2. Remove the humidifier wick / humidifier filter. If it is due for replacement, discard it; if it is still good, air-dry it fully on a rack (never bag a wet wick).
  3. Rinse the tank and housing, wipe dry, and leave parts open overnight so hidden corners air out.
  4. Store the dry tank, base, and dry wick (or a sealed spare) in a clean bin — not a sealed wet bag in a hot attic.

Label the bin with the model so next season’s wick match is easy.

Honest stop

Do not add fragrance oils to “freshen” a stored tank. If the unit already smells musty, clean first — storage will not fix biofilm.
