Humidifier wick — store uncompressed so the frame stays true

Humidifier wick

When you store a humidifier wick for the off-season, keep it uncompressed in its frame. A crushed wick warps the frame and fits poorly next winter.

A humidifier wick (or humidifier filter) that sat crushed in a small bin often returns warped — the frame bows and the wick no longer seats square in the housing. Store it dry and uncompressed.

Store a humidifier wick uncompressed for the off-season

  1. Empty and dry the tank first. Remove the wick and let it air-dry fully so it is not sealed wet into a bag.
  2. Keep the wick in its frame (or the shape the housing expects). Do not fold, roll tight, or stack heavy boxes on top of it in storage.
  3. Prefer a roomy bin or the original box with space around the wick — compression over summer is what warps the frame.
  4. Next season, inspect for musty smell or mineral cement; replace the humidifier wick if it will not sit flat or still smells after a rinse your manual allows.

Honest stop: do not leave a descaling tablet in the tank over storage, and do not run a warped wick that gaps around the housing — mist output and mineral dust both suffer.
