Humidifier wick

When a cleaned humidifier still smells musty, replace an exhausted wick, empty and dry the tank daily, and know when to retire the unit.

A musty smell after a careful clean usually means the wick is exhausted, not that you missed a scrub. Old media holds odor in the fibers; scrubbing harder seldom fixes it.

Replace the wick instead of scrubbing forever

If the wick is brown, stiff, slimy, or still smells after a rinse, replace it. Follow the cues in When to replace a humidifier wick. A fresh wick plus a clean tank base is the ordinary reset.

Daily tank habits

  1. Empty standing water when you are done for the day.
  2. Wipe and air-dry the tank and base so the next fill starts dry.
  3. In hard-water areas, prefer distilled water to slow mineral crust that traps odor.

Oils and additives

Do not add essential oils or fragrance unless your exact model’s manual allows it. Oils can ruin wicks, coatings, and sensors on machines that were never designed for them.

Ultrasonic note

Ultrasonic units may use a demineralization cartridge or just a tank and disc — not a wick. Clean the disc path the manual describes; this page’s wick swap applies to evaporative wick-style machines.

When to retire the unit

If mold or a strong musty smell returns immediately after a new wick, a deep clean, and dry storage habits, the plastic tank or base may be harboring growth in seams you cannot reach. Retire the unit rather than running it in a bedroom.

Coraco Studio™ does not sell wicks and has no live store links yet.
