Windshield wiper blades — rubber refill vs full blade adapter

Wiper size

Choosing a rubber refill instead of a full windshield wiper blade assembly means the adapter usually stays on the arm — match wiper blade size before you buy.

A rubber refill swaps only the squeegee; a full windshield wiper blade replaces the frame too. Know which you bought so you do not yank the adapter off the arm when wiper blade size already matches.

Rubber refill vs full windshield wiper blade — adapter stays on the arm

  1. Check the package: “refill” or “rubber only” means the metal or plastic frame and the arm adapter stay put.
  2. For a refill, release the old rubber from the frame claws and slide the new strip through — leave the adapter clipped to the wiper arm.
  3. For a full blade assembly, release the adapter from the arm, then install the new blade’s adapter per the enclosed diagram.
  4. Confirm length (wiper blade size) on both sides before you open the second package.

Honest stop: if the frame is rusted, twisted, or the adapter will not lock, buy a full blade assembly — a refill will not fix a bent spine.
