Windshield wiper blades — support the arm spring during a blade swap

Wiper size

Hold and support the wiper arm so the spring does not slam the bare arm onto glass while you swap windshield wiper blades — one beat for safer installs.

When you change windshield wiper blades, the arm spring wants to snap the bare metal onto the glass. Support the arm (or rest it carefully) through the swap so you avoid chips — especially useful before fitting winter wiper blades or chasing chatter from a damaged edge.

Support the wiper arm spring while you swap windshield wiper blades

  1. Lift the arm off the glass and hold it firmly; place a folded towel on the windshield under the arm path as a backup.
  2. Release the old blade adapter while keeping the arm supported — never let the bare arm free-fall.
  3. Click the new blade on until the adapter locks, still supporting the arm, then lower it gently onto the glass.
  4. Repeat for the other side. Test a light mist wipe; if chatter remains with a supported clean install, check arm twist and blade size next.

Honest stop: a cracked windshield from a prior slam needs glass repair before blade tuning — new blades will not hide a chip in the sweep path.
