Windshield wiper blades — wet the glass before the first wipe

Wiper size

After new windshield wiper blades go on, wet the glass before the first wipe so dry rubber does not chatter or streak — one beat.

Brand-new windshield wiper blades dragged across dry glass can chatter and leave early streaks. Wet the windshield (washer fluid or a clean mist) before the first wipe so the rubber edges seat smoothly.

Wet the windshield before the first wipe with new blades

  1. Finish seating both new blades, lower the arms gently onto the glass, and confirm adapters clicked — do not run the wipers yet.
  2. Spray washer fluid or mist clean water across the wipe path so the glass is clearly wet, not just damp in one corner.
  3. Run one slow wipe cycle and watch for even contact. A short chatter on bone-dry glass often disappears once the rubber has a wet track.
  4. If streaks remain on wet glass, clean the glass with a dedicated glass cleaner next — do not keep dry-wiping hoping the blade will “break in.”

Honest stop: never pour boiling water on a frozen windshield to wet it — use washer fluid and safe ice clearing before you run new blades.
