New garage remote will not program — check it matches your opener
Garage remote
A new garage door remote that will not learn may just be the wrong type. Check your opener brand and learn button color before you return it.

A garage door remote has to match the radio system of your opener. A remote that will not program at all is often the wrong type, not a bad battery.
Match the remote to the opener
- Find the opener’s brand and model on the label on the motor unit.
- Note the learn button color on the motor; brands often use the color to mark the radio type.
- Compare both to the compatibility list on the remote’s package or listing.
- Put a fresh battery in the remote and follow its programming steps exactly once more.
- If it still will not learn, return it and buy one listed for your opener.
Stay clear of the door while testing, and keep kids away from the remote and the door.
