Refrigerator water filter — purge the first glasses to the sink

Fridge filter

After installing a refrigerator water filter, purge the first glasses into the sink so carbon fines and air clear before you drink — one beat.

A new refrigerator water filter can spit air and fine carbon into the first pours. After you seat and lock the fridge filter model, fill several glasses from the dispenser into the sink so purge water does not go into a drinking glass or the ice maker first.

Purge the first fridge filter glasses to the sink

  1. Confirm the new filter is locked (including any quarter-turn after the click) and the fridge door or grille is closed.
  2. Dispense into a glass held over the sink, dump, and repeat for several glasses until the stream runs clear and steady with fewer sputters.
  3. Skip pouring those first glasses into a pitcher you will drink from. Air and carbon fines belong in the drain on day one.
  4. After the purge, reset the filter light if your model needs a manual reset, then wait for a fresh ice harvest before trusting ice taste.

If the water still tastes dusty, plastic, or metallic after the purge, see why fridge water tastes bad after a filter change.

Honest stop: if there is still no water after a long purge, check the lock and air purge path — do not keep drinking cloudy first glasses hoping it clears in the cup.
