When the old refrigerator water filter comes out, a little water and residue often stays in the housing. Wiping it first helps the new filter seat cleanly.

Clean the refrigerator water filter housing first

  1. Remove the old filter with a towel underneath to catch drips.
  2. Wipe the inside of the housing and the cover with a clean, damp cloth, then dry it with a second cloth.
  3. Check for any bits of old gasket or debris near the opening.
  4. Insert the new filter, turn or push until it locks, and run water as your fridge manual says.

One quick wipe is the whole beat. A clean housing gives the new refrigerator water filter a fair start.
