Refrigerator water filter — shut off ice maker during purge

Fridge filter

When you change a refrigerator water filter, shut the ice maker off during the purge so mid-change cubes do not refill the bin with unflushed water.

A new refrigerator water filter needs a purge. If the ice maker stays on, it can harvest mid-change water into the bin — then you taste the old line in the first cubes.

Shut the ice maker off during a fridge filter purge

  1. Install the correct filter model for your fridge and open the water line as the manual directs.
  2. Switch the ice maker off (wire arm up, paddle, or control setting) before you run the long dispenser purge.
  3. Flush the dispenser volume your manual lists (often several minutes / gallons) until spitters stop and taste clears.
  4. Dump the ice already in the bin, turn the ice maker back on, and discard the first harvest if cubes still taste off.

If the dispenser never recovers flow after a purge, revisit seating and air purge — not another ice harvest.
