Refrigerator water filter — wet the O-ring before you seat it

Fridge filter

Before seating a refrigerator water filter, wet the O-ring lightly so the fridge filter model cartridge twists home without pinching — one beat for leaks and hard installs.

A dry O-ring on a new refrigerator water filter can pinch or roll when you twist the cartridge. A light water wet on the ring helps the correct fridge filter model seat square and reduces drip complaints after install.

Wet the refrigerator water filter O-ring before you seat it

  1. Confirm the fridge filter model matches the door or grille stamp, then remove the protective cap without tearing the O-ring.
  2. Moisten the O-ring with clean tap water only — no oil, dish soap, or petroleum jelly unless the filter manual explicitly allows a named food-safe lubricant.
  3. Align and twist or push per your fridge style until the cartridge locks; stop if you feel the ring bunching and back out to reseat.
  4. Wipe drips, reset the filter light if needed, and purge a few cups before tasting.

Honest stop: if the O-ring is nicked, missing, or the head will not lock after two careful tries, stop forcing it — a wrong fridge filter model or damaged head needs the matching part, not more torque.
