Key fob battery — keep the key ring off the fob buttons

Key fob

A crowded key ring can press key fob buttons in a pocket and drain the CR2032. Keep metal rings clear of the pad so the key fob battery lasts — one beat.

A fat key ring jammed against the pad can hold a lock or unlock button down in a pocket and flatten a fresh CR2032. Before you blame a dead key fob battery, move the ring so metal and keys sit away from the buttons — then retest range.

Keep the key ring off the key fob buttons

  1. Open the key ring enough to slide the fob so the pad faces away from the thickest keys and charms — buttons should not rest against hard metal when the set is in a pocket.
  2. If the ring still presses the pad, use a short split ring or a soft clip between the fob and the main ring so the shell can sit flat without constant button pressure.
  3. After you rearrange, wait a minute, then test lock and unlock outdoors. A fob that was draining overnight often recovers range once buttons stop staying half-pressed.
  4. If range is still poor with a known-good CR2032 and a free pad, open the shell next — worn contacts or a cracked key fob case can look like a weak cell.

Honest stop: if the pad is sticky or the board is corroded, clearing the key ring will not restore a dead contact path — clean or replace the shell kit next.
