When lock and unlock stop working right after a 12-volt battery swap, try one short re-sync before you replace the fob.

A car that will not answer the remote right after a 12-volt battery change is often fine — the body module simply lost the last “hello” from the fob. Try a re-sync before you buy another remote.

One short re-sync

  1. Sit in the driver seat with all doors closed.
  2. Hold the fob against the start button (or the marked backup slot on the steering column / console — check the owner’s manual wording for “remote” or “transmitter”).
  3. Press the start button once with a foot on the brake, or turn the ignition to ON if you have a keyed switch, then press lock on the fob.
  4. Turn the car off. Test lock and unlock from outside.

If buttons still do nothing, confirm the coin cell in the fob before a locksmith trip — see Is it the battery or a dead fob?.

Honest stop

Push-button smart keys that never wake after a battery job may need a scan-tool relearn. That is locksmith or dealer work, not another shelf remote.
