Printhead alignment without wasting paper
Printer ink
Use auto-align after a cartridge swap or clean, pick the clearest pattern on one sheet for manual align, and know when streaks are clogs instead.

After a cartridge swap or a cleaning cycle, text can look slightly skewed or one color can sit a hair off the others. That is often alignment, not empty ink. A short align routine uses far less paper than printing “test pages until it looks right.”
Alignment is not a clog
Alignment lines up where each color lands. Clogged nozzles leave gaps or missing segments on a nozzle check. If the nozzle check already shows broken lines, run a light clean first — see Clean printhead streaks without wasting ink — then align.
Prefer auto-align when the printer offers it
Many inkjets have Automatic alignment or Print head alignment under Setup, Maintenance, or Tools.
- Load plain paper the printer expects (often letter).
- Close the cover fully so sensors and the carriage can park.
- Start auto-align and leave the printer still until it finishes and parks the head.
Do not open the door mid-cycle or pull the paper. One auto pass is usually enough after a new cartridge.
Manual align on a single sheet
If the menu only shows a printed pattern:
- Print the alignment page once.
- Pick the number or letter under the clearest, most even block for each row (the least streaky or offset pair).
- Enter those choices on the panel or in the driver.
- Print one confirmation page if the menu offers it — then stop.
You do not need a stack of drafts. One careful read of the first sheet beats five half-guessed reprints.
When to stop
If colors still sit wrong after a confirmed correct cartridge number and one solid align — or the printer reports a head or sensor fault — it is a service question, not another tray of paper. Confirm the supply number with How to find your exact ink or toner number.
