Store printer ink cartridges upright and cool
Printer ink
Keep spare printer ink cartridges upright in a cool indoor spot — never in a hot car — so seals and chips stay ready when you install them.

Spare printer ink cartridges last longer when you store them the boring way: upright, sealed, and out of heat. A hot glove box can cook seals and leave you with a leaky or “empty” stall on install day.
Keep printer ink cartridges upright and cool
- Leave each cartridge in its foil or sealed bag until you need it. Open packs dry out faster.
- Stand them upright (label readable, vents/nozzles as the maker shows — usually not lying on the print face for long storage).
- Choose a cool indoor shelf — closet or cabinet beats a sunny windowsill, garage shelf in summer, or a parked car.
- Match the ink cartridge number (and XL vs standard) before you buy a multi-pack so you are not aging the wrong boxes. See How to find your exact ink or toner number.
When you finally install, still peel any protective tape first — Remove cartridge protective tape.
Honest stop
Do not refrigerate or freeze ink unless the maker’s insert says so. Condensation on a cold cartridge can confuse chips and wet contacts.
